During Katrina, FEMA was run by a Bush appointee who had no idea what he was doing.

I’m just amazed that Stossel has the gall to claim that businesses are “competent” as a rule at all. I’ll remember that next time my cable goes down for the 12th time in 2 months.

I’ll remember that when in college, the owner of the burger joint I worked at was known to throw entire trays full of food against a wall when getting behind in orders on a busy night. (instead of adding one more worker, more than paying for that tray of food).

I’ll remember that next time an entire sector of hedge funds and investment banks decides to buy high risk junk assets and take down the world’s largest economy in the process.

The knee-jerk, jingoistic “Because FEMA is incompetent because government tends to be…” claptrap is so tired and full of abject mularcky. It would help things if Republican Presidents didn’t appoint people in charge who are ideologically bent on destroying the very department they are chosen to run.

One more case of undiagnosed head trauma. And the most amazing thing about this and too many like it to even count, is the people who buy it. Just one more example of the stupefaction of America due to an agenda foisted off as truth by a corrupt “news” source. You bet Libertarians and Republicans are first in line for aid. It’s their right. You? I think you already know that answer. John Stossel is a typical Libertarian.

I just got back from running errands and had the entertaining experience of having someone come at me the wrong way on a one way stretch of road. Fortunately he was not going fast, but it showed me what a great idea it would be to just let people do whatever the hell they want without that horrible government intervening.

re: #2 Rocky-in-Connecticut

Target was seen as a competent company and was doing quite well in the US. They expanded to Canada, and it turned into a fiasco. The company has lost tons of money on that plan, and they’ve finally shuttered their Canadian operations.

Meanwhile, Walmart has plenty of supply problems too. They frequently have empty shelves here because they don’t have anyone to bring the items out from the back and put them on the shelves. They lack the number of people working, since employing more people to work hurts the bottom line for the store.

But Walmart can’t do much if roads are cut by weather/storms, can’t coordinate with local officials to find out what’s needed, requisition emergency equipment (like ambulances, fire engines, police cars, etc.) which is part of FEMA’s mission to coordinate emergency response.

FEMA can do a good job, but Katrina was a double whammy of a massive hurricane that hit a particularly large area of the country, and a FEMA head who was grossly incompetent at his job.
